Strategy is not a document. It is a triangle: a clear vision, systems that carry it out, and decisions that keep it on track. Miss one corner and the other two collapse.
Vision: where you are going and why A useful vision is specific enough to say no to things. It describes who you serve, what you want to be known for and what success looks like in a few years. If your team cannot repeat it in one sentence, it is not clear enough yet.
Systems: how the work actually gets done Vision without systems stays a slogan. Systems are the processes, tools, roles and routines that turn intention into daily action: how leads are handled, how projects are delivered, how quality is checked, how money is tracked. Good systems make the right behavior the easy behavior.
Decisions: how you adjust along the way Every week brings choices about priorities, budget, people and opportunities. Smart decisions are guided by the vision, informed by data from your systems, and made at the right level, by the person closest to the information.
Signs the triangle is broken
- Lots of activity, but no clear progress: vision is missing.
- Great plans that never stick: systems are missing.
- Constant firefighting and bottlenecks at the top: decision-making is missing.
