Prompt Engineering Is a Business Skill, Not a Tech Trick

By Islam Mohammed Saad ยท August 12, 2026

Prompt engineering sounds technical, but at its core it is something business people already know: giving a clear brief. The people who get the most out of AI are rarely the most technical. They are the clearest thinkers.

A good prompt is a good brief Think about how you would brief a smart new colleague. You would explain the context, the goal, who the audience is, what to avoid and what the result should look like. AI needs exactly the same things.

A simple structure that works

  • Role and context: who the output is for and what situation you are in.
  • Task: what you want done, in one clear sentence.
  • Constraints: length, tone, language, what must be included or avoided.
  • Format: a list, a table, an email, three options to compare.
  • Examples: one sample of what good looks like, if you have it.

Iterate instead of starting over Treat the first answer as a draft. Ask for a shorter version, a different angle, a more formal tone or a comparison of options. Refining is faster than rewriting, and it teaches you what instructions produce the results you want.

Build a prompt library When a prompt works well for a recurring task, such as a client proposal outline, a meeting summary or a social post, save it. A small shared library turns individual skill into a team capability.

Why it is a business skill Clarity of thought, clear communication and good judgment are leadership skills. Prompting simply makes them visible. Invest in them, and every AI tool you use becomes more valuable.
